Fr. René J. Butler, M.S. assumed his duties at the Shrine on the last weekend of May, 2011. Before that he was Pastor at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Windsor, Vermont, where he had served since January 2008.
Fr. René was born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. He entered the La Salette high school seminary in Hartford, Connecticut, completed his philosophy and theology studies in Rome, and after ordination worked in La Salette seminaries in Altamont, New York and Ipswich, Massachusetts. He later ministered in two parishes in England and at Holy Trinity Church in Westfield, Massachusetts. He also served as Secretary General of the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette in the 80's and again in the 00's. In that capacity he has many times provided English-French simultaneous translation for international gatherings of La Salette Missionaries. Through such meetings, he has met hundreds of La Salette Missionaries from around the world.
He is one of five children. His oldest and youngest brothers, Robert and Norman, are also La Salette Missionaries, and have labored over 30 years in our missions in Argentina and Bolivia. His sister Denise lives with her husband in Fitchburg, and his identical twin brother, Roger, lives with his wife in Oxford, Massachusetts.
Fr. René has visited the Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette in France about twenty times, most often for a full month.
